Essure® for Permanent Sterilization

Essure® is a procedure designed for permanent sterilization, or permanent birth control.

How Does Essure® Permanent Sterilization Work?

In this permanent sterilization procedure, a soft, flexible insert will be permanently placed in each Fallopian Tube. No incisions are necessary; the insert will be delivered through the vagina and uterus. General anesthesia is not a requirement. As time passes, a natural barrier will form around the inserts, preventing sperm from reaching your eggs.

What is the Recovery Time?

Most women will be able to return to their normal activities in 1–2 days, if not sooner.

After 3 months, we will administer an Essure® Confirmation Test to determine if you can rely on Essure® for birth control. For some women, it may take longer than 3 months for the procedure to be effective. We do recommend that you use an additional form of birth control until we can confirm that Essure® can be relied on to prevent pregnancy.

What are the Side Effects?

Common side effects of this procedure include:

  • Pain
  • Cramping
  • Vaginal Bleeding
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Fainting
  • Back Pain
